On October 22, 2019, Professor Zhang Xinsheng, Vice President of theEuropean Chinese Language Teaching Association and Director of theModern Language Center at the University of London ’s EnlightenmentUniversity, was invited to give a lecture on "European ChineseTeaching Development and Chinese International Education". Thelecture was presided over by Mr. Li Ying from the Faculty ofHumanities and Law. Professor Gao Lieguo, Associate Professor YangXiaowei, Su Anmei from the School of Foreign Languages and about 150students from the Chinese Department participated in the lecture.

In the lecture, Professor Zhang Xinsheng first reviewed the history ofChinese language education in Europe. He mentioned that Chineselanguage teaching in Europe has a history of one or two hundredyears. However, most of them were social elites, and large-scaleChinese language learning began in the past two decades. Among the EUcountries, the Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms in theUK account for the most, which is closely related to the developmentof Confucius Institutes in the UK. Professor Zhang then analyzed thedevelopment of Chinese teaching in the UK in the past decade.Although the Chinese language teaching in the UK has grownsignificantly compared to the 1990s, there is still much room fordevelopment compared to other languages such as Spanish and German.

Subsequently,Professor Zhang expressed his views on "Chinese InternationalEducation" and "International Chinese Education". Hebelieves that the former emphasizes the ontology of Chinese teaching,and the latter emphasizes the localization of teaching. Localizedteaching is centered on the learner and focuses on the communicativefunction of language. In the process of Chinese internationalization,in the current environment of economic globalization and linguisticand cultural diversity, localization is the only way forinternationalization. It is not only reflected in the compilation oftextbooks and teaching, but also in the design and assessment ofeducational system System and other aspects. Professor Zhang'sresearch pushed the localization research on a new journey, whichmade the teachers and students fresh and inspired.

After the lecture, teachers and students actively asked for advice.Professor Zhang answered questions one by one on the spot, andteachers and students benefited greatly.
