Scienceand Technology History Teacher Goes to Greece to Attend International Conference on History of Science

On September 12-15, 2019, at the invitation of the International Societyof History of Science, Ni Genjin, Professor Wei Luling and LecturerChen Zhiguo of the Rural Policy Research Center attended the firstInternational Conference on the History of Science in Athens, Greece.More than 200 scholars from more than 20 countries around the worldincluding the United States, Britain, France, Russia, South Korea,Japan, China and Greece attended the event.

On the morning of September 12, the conference held a grand openingceremony. Sergei Demidov, President of the International Academy ofHistory of Science, presided over the meeting. Professor CostasGavrog, Director of the History Department of the University ofAthens Lu (Kostas Gavroglou) made a speech. Professor Robert Halleuxof the Free University of Amsterdam gave a keynote report entitled"History of Science and Human History: The Dream of GeorgeSutton, a Famous Modern History of Science"

ConferenceOpening Ceremony

From the afternoon of September 12th to the morning of 15th, theparticipants were divided into the relationship and comparison ofastronomy in the countries of Eurasia, the history of metalprocessing technology in China and the West, the history of medicineand biology, the methodology of history of science and technology,History of mathematics and astronomy; the spread of Islamic scienceto the Mediterranean, the history of the spread of global agricultureand other 18 topics for group discussion. On the morning andafternoon of the 14th, three teachers of the Agricultural HistoryInstitute participated in a special discussion on the history of thespread of global agriculture, and gave a special report on theirrespective papers. Ni Genjin ’s “Research and Promotion ofCassava in South China during the Anti-Japanese War”, Wei Luling ’s“Distribution, Cognition and Utilization of Southern Silkworm”and Chen Zhiguo ’s “Development, Protection and Development ofLitchi Resources in Zengcheng from the Perspective of AgriculturalCultural Heritage” Experts and scholars from the country conductedextensive and in-depth exchanges.

On the morning of September 15th, the conference held a closing ceremonyand awards ceremony. The former president of the Chinese Society ofScience and Technology, Liu Du, won the Kovale Award for"Cross-cultural Studies of Five-Level Stupa". Orly Lewis(Orly Lewis) was awarded the Youth Historiography by theInternational Academy of Science History for their respectivemonographs "Lavoisier e Parthenope. Contributo adunastoriadellachimica del regno di Napoli" and "Praxagorasof Kos on Arteries, Pulse and Pneuma" Home award. In theafternoon, after the meeting, the International Association ofHistory of Science arranged the participants to visit the ruins ofthe Temple of Poseidon in Greece.

As a global symposium in the history of international science andtechnology, not only the representatives of scholars from all overthe world, but also the history of science and technology, includingthe history of physics, mathematics, astronomy, etc. Faced with thesame historical event, people from different countries have differentthinking angles and perspectives. As participants in the research ofagricultural history at South China Agricultural University, theymade reports, exchanges, and debates in the same venue with them. Thepurpose of progress, and timely understanding of the research trendsand number of foreign colleagues.
