On October 22, 2019, Professor Zhang Xinsheng, Vice President of theEuropean Chinese Language Teaching Association and Director of theModern Language Center at the University of London’sEnlightenment University, was invited to give a lecture on “EuropeanChinese Teaching Development and Chinese International Education”.The lecture was hostedby Mr. Li Ying from the Collegeof Humanities and Law. Professor Gao Lieguo, Associate Professor YangXiaowei, Su Anmei from the Collegeof Foreign Languages and about 150 students from the ChineseDepartment participated in the lecture.

In the lecture, Professor Zhang Xinsheng first reviewed the history ofChinese language education in Europe. He mentioned that Chineselanguage teaching in Europe has a history of one or two hundredyears. However, most of them were social elites, and large-scaleChinese language learning began in the past two decades. Among EUcountries, the Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms in theUK account for the most, which is closely related to the developmentof Confucius Institutes in the UK. Professor Zhang then analyzed thedevelopment of Chinese teaching in the UK in the past decade.Although the Chinese language teaching in the UK has grownsignificantly compared to the 1990s, there is still much room ofdevelopment compared to other languages such as Spanish and German.
Subsequently, Professor Zhang expressed his views on “ChineseInternational Education”and “InternationalChinese Education”.He believedthat the former emphasizedthe ontology of Chinese teaching, and the latter wouldemphasizethe localization of teaching. Localized teaching is centered on thelearner and focuses on the communicative function of language. In theprocess of Chinese internationalization, in the current environmentof economic globalization and linguistic and cultural diversity,localization is the only way for internationalization. It is not onlyreflected in the compilation of textbooks and teaching, but also inthe design and assessment of educational system and other aspects.Professor Zhang's research pushed the localization research tobe ona new journey, which made the teachers and students feelfreshand inspired.
After the lecture, teachers and students actively asked for advice.Professor Zhang answered questions one by one on the spot, andteachers and students benefitedgreatly.
